It is taught hands-on because the procedure specifies parameters and never technique, and technique is the part that decides whether a joint is sound.

A certified welder wears the chest-mounted unit through a real joint and describes what they see as they see it: how the puddle is behaving, why the rod angle is where it is, when the travel speed has to change.

This is the one part of the trade that has never had a good record. A photograph shows a finished bead; a procedure gives a current range. Neither shows a pool of molten metal changing shape and what the welder does about it.

Reading the puddle

Whether it is running cold, about to fall through, or sitting right. Every correction downstream depends on this read, and it is entirely visual and tactile.

Position and technique discipline

Rod angle, arc length, and whether a joint wants a stringer or a weave — decisions the WPS permits a range for and does not choose between.

Heat management by feel

Judging interpass temperature and pacing without stopping to measure on every pass, which is what experience buys.

Self-inspection before anyone else looks

Spotting undercut or lack of penetration in your own work and correcting before it reaches NDT.

Why welder training plateaus without a way to record technique

Welding schools produce welders who can pass a test. Shops report the same gap afterwards: a certified welder who cannot yet hold quality on awkward positions or thick section, because the test demonstrated a coupon and the work is not a coupon.

Closing that gap has always required standing next to someone better. It works and it does not scale — one experienced welder can supervise one apprentice at a time, and every hour spent teaching is an hour not welding. Recording the technique is the only version of that instruction which can be replayed.

The welder shortage and what it means for training

The American Welding Society projects 320,500 new welding professionals needed in the United States by 2029 — a figure from the trade body rather than an extrapolation.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts welders, cutters, solderers and brazers at 457,300 in 2024 growing 2% to 467,200 by 2034, with roughly 45,600 openings a year and a median annual wage of $51,000 as of May 2024. Two percent growth against 45,600 annual openings means the openings are replacement, not expansion.

Sector-wide, the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte estimate US manufacturing needs up to 3.8 million additional workers between 2024 and 2033 (Taking charge, April 2024). Useful as background; the AWS and BLS figures above are the ones that describe welding.

Certification, continuity and what qualification records carry

A welder's qualification is a performance record: they demonstrated a sound weld in a process and position, to AWS D1.1 or ASME Section IX, and continuity records keep it current.

It is portable, valuable and silent on technique. Two welders can hold identical qualifications and produce visibly different work, which is the entire reason experienced welders are worth more than their certificates say.

Is my technique mine to keep?

Yes, and this page is not going to argue otherwise. A welder's technique is portable, certified and personally owned. It took years to build and it is the reason they can walk into another shop on Monday morning.

The narrow claim is worth stating exactly: a recording of how you read a puddle trains the next welder faster. It does not weld, it does not hold your certification, and it does not make you replaceable.
