Why machinist training programmes do not close the gap

NIMS credentialing is the recognised standard for machining skills in the US, and shops certified to ISO 9001 or AS9100 keep training records to demonstrate competence to an auditor.

A credential says a machinist has demonstrated a skill against a national standard. It is genuinely useful for hiring and useless for handover: it does not tell the next person anything about the machines they are about to be handed.

Am I training my replacement?
